World Water Day

The importance of World Water Day for the global water supply and its link to the SDGs

World Water Day, which is celebrated annually on 22 March, highlights the essential importance of water for life and sustainable development. Water is one of the most valuable resources on earth and forms the basis for health, food security, economic development and environmental stability. Nevertheless, more than two billion people worldwide still do not have secure access to clean drinking water, which leads to far-reaching social, economic and health problems. Climate change, environmental pollution and unequal distribution of resources are further exacerbating the water crisis and require increased international commitment.

The United Nations has included the provision of clean water and basic sanitation as a central goal in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. In particular, Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6 – “Clean water and sanitation” – calls for universal access to safe water by 2030, but other SDGs are also closely linked to this topic: SDG 3 (Good health and well-being) emphasises the need for clean water to prevent disease, SDG 2 (Zero hunger) depends on an adequate water supply for agriculture, and SDG 13 (Climate action) recognises the impact of water scarcity on global climate resilience.

The Lazarus Union and the human right to water

As an awareness-NGO with general consultative status at the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSOC), the Lazarus Union sees the supply of clean water not just as a technical or infrastructural challenge, but as a fundamental human right. Water is not just a resource, but an indispensable basis of life that must be equally available to all people. Unequal access to water increases social injustice, poverty and health risks, especially in disadvantaged regions.

The Lazarus Union is committed to raising awareness of the water crisis through awareness campaigns, education and cooperation with partner organisations. It supports measures that promote the equitable distribution and sustainable use of water, especially for marginalised population groups. This is done in accordance with the principles of the UN Human Rights Charter, which recognises the right to clean drinking water as an integral part of a dignified life.

In a world where water is increasingly becoming a scarce resource, it is the duty of the international community to take responsibility. World Water Day reminds us that water is not just an environmental or development issue, but a central question of human dignity and justice. The Lazarus Union is therefore firmly committed to solutions that ensure universal access to clean water and recognise the right to water as a universal obligation of all nations.
