World Portuguese Language Day
World Portuguese Language Day celebrates the cultural richness and linguistic diversity of Portuguese-speaking communities across the globe. For the Lazarus Union it underscores the significance of the Portuguese language as a global force for communication, creativity, and cultural exchange.
Portuguese, a Romance language originating from the Iberian Peninsula, is spoken by over 260 million people worldwide. It serves as the official language of Portugal, Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, and São Tomé and Príncipe. Additionally, significant Portuguese-speaking communities exist in countries like the United States, Canada, France, and Luxembourg, among others.
This day also has an outstanding significance for the Lazarus Union, as Brazil is one of our strongest country organisations.
The celebration of World Portuguese Language Day emphasizes the importance of preserving and promoting the Portuguese language and its diverse cultural manifestations. It fosters solidarity and mutual understanding among Portuguese speakers worldwide, transcending geographical and cultural boundaries.
Furthermore, this observance serves as a platform for promoting education, literature, and cultural exchange in Portuguese-speaking countries and beyond. It highlights the role of language as a catalyst for social cohesion, economic development, and global cooperation.
In essence, World Portuguese Language Day acknowledges the enduring legacy and dynamic evolution of the Portuguese language while celebrating its profound influence on the cultural tapestry of the world.
