The significance of Human Rights Day for the Lazarus Union
On 10 December each year, Human Rights Day commemorates the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948. This document, a milestone in human history, formulates fundamental principles such as dignity, freedom and equality that apply to all people regardless of origin, gender, religion or political conviction. For the Lazarus Union, an organisation with general consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), this day is not only a day of remembrance but also a call to action. As an NGO dedicated to raising awareness, the Lazarus Union recognises the urgent need to protect these universal rights, especially at a time when they are being challenged worldwide.
The mission of the Lazarus Union is to build bridges of understanding and solidarity. Promoting human rights awareness is at the core of its mission. On this day, the organisation intensifies its efforts to advance discourses on inclusion, social justice and the protection of marginalised groups. In seminars, campaigns and dialogue forums, the Lazarus Union brings together people from different contexts to strengthen the common values of humanity. With its consultative status at the United Nations, the Union contributes to bringing the perspectives of grassroots organisations into the global dialogue to ensure that the message of human rights does not remain just abstract ideals, but brings about concrete improvements for the most vulnerable.
The Lazarus Union regards Human Rights Day as both a warning and an inspiration. It is a warning because violations of fundamental rights continue unabated worldwide and require solidarity. It is an inspiration because it shows that progress is possible when civil society, governments and international organisations work together. For the Lazarus Union, this day is a call to renew our commitment to peace, respect and mutual appreciation. Through targeted action and by promoting an awareness of the responsibility of each individual, the Lazarus Union contributes to realising the vision of a world in which the dignity of all people is protected and respected.
