A Call for Action on Sanitation and Dignity

World Toilet Day: 19th November

Every year on November 19th, the world observes World Toilet Day—a day dedicated to raising awareness about the critical importance of sanitation and hygiene. This year’s theme focuses on the urgent need to ensure safe and equitable access to sanitation facilities for all, aligning closely with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation.

The Importance of World Toilet Day

Despite progress in recent years, billions of people around the globe still lack access to basic sanitation facilities. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), an estimated 4.2 billion people live without safely managed sanitation services. This lack of access leads to numerous health issues, environmental degradation, and social inequalities. World Toilet Day seeks to shed light on these challenges and advocate for solutions that promote dignity, health, and well-being.

Linking to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

World Toilet Day is not just about toilets; it’s about dignity, health, and sustainability. The challenges posed by inadequate sanitation are interconnected with several of the SDGs, including:

  • ЦУР 3: Хорошее здоровье и благополучие
Access to clean and safe toilets reduces the risk of disease transmission, significantly improving public health outcomes.
  • ЦУР 6: Чистая вода и санитария
Achieving universal access to sanitation is crucial for ensuring clean water and hygiene, which are essential for sustainable development.
  • ЦУР 10: Сокращение неравенства
Ensuring access to sanitation facilities helps address disparities faced by marginalized and vulnerable populations, promoting social equity.
