International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation

The International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), observed on 6 February, is a crucial moment for global awareness and action. FGM is a deeply entrenched violation of human rights, affecting millions of women and girls worldwide. It causes lifelong physical and psychological harm, depriving individuals of their right to health, safety, and dignity.

For an awareness-driven NGO like the Lazarus Union, this day is particularly significant. As an organization committed to humanitarian service and social justice, the Lazarus Union stands firmly against all forms of violence and discrimination. Raising awareness about FGM aligns with our mission to protect the vulnerable, advocate for equality, and foster a world where every individual can live free from harm and oppression.

The fight against FGM is directly linked to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly:

  • SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being – FGM poses severe health risks, including infections, childbirth complications, and even death. Ending this practice is essential to ensuring the health and well-being of millions of women and girls worldwide.
  • SDG 5: Gender Equality – FGM is a manifestation of gender inequality and deeply rooted discrimination. Eliminating this harmful practice is a crucial step toward achieving gender equality and empowering women and girls to make decisions about their own bodies and futures.

Eradicating FGM requires global cooperation, education, and legal action. The Lazarus Union urges governments, civil society, and individuals to stand together in the fight against this violation of human rights. By raising awareness, supporting survivors, and advocating for policy changes, we can help put an end to FGM and create a future where all women and girls are free from violence and discrimination.

On this day, we reaffirm our commitment to protecting human dignity and call upon everyone to join us in the fight for a world free of FGM. Zero tolerance means action—let’s work together to make a lasting change.
