Commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz

Auschwitz stands like no other place for the unimaginable suffering and incomprehensible cruelty that racial fanaticism and the ideology of National Socialism brought upon the world. It is synonymous with the systematic murder of millions of Jews, Sinti and Roma, people with disabilities, political persecutees and other minorities. Auschwitz reminds us all never to forget the abysses of human history.

January 27, the day of the liberation of Auschwitz, is a day of remembrance, a “day of reflection”. It calls on us to pause and look at the past in order to gain orientation for the future. This is not a mere duty, but an unceasing obligation – an obligation that the Lazarus Union, as a non-governmental organization with general consultative status at the United Nations, has deeply internalized.

Our task is to contribute to ensuring that the darkest chapters of history can never be repeated by actively remembering and taking clear action. The lessons of Auschwitz must not fade in the shadow of time, but must remain the foundation of our work and commitment – today, tomorrow and for all generations to come.

In 2025, 80 years after the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp, confronting the oppressive truths of our history is more important than ever. In the face of a frightening resurgence of anti-Semitism, hatred and violence in many parts of the world, each and every one of us bears responsibility. Responsibility to stand up, to look and to stand up firmly for humanity, dignity and freedom.

The best insurance against ethnic hatred, totalitarianism and fascism remains living memory. We commemorate the victims not only to honor their dignity and their suffering, but also to question our own actions and to become better. Remembrance and examination are not only a retrospective view of the past, but a signpost for the design of a peaceful future.

The Lazarus Union stands firmly by the side of all those who work to protect human rights, promote tolerance and fight all forms of discrimination. With every step we take together on this path, we fulfill our obligation not only to remember the horrors of Auschwitz, but also to actively ensure that “never again” is more than a hope – that it becomes a reality.
