International Hearing Day

International Hearing Day, celebrated annually on 3 March, highlights the importance of hearing and the impact of hearing loss on the lives of those affected. It aims to raise awareness of the prevention of hearing loss, access to appropriate treatment options and the social integration of people with hearing loss. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that hearing loss affects more than 1.5 billion people worldwide – a figure that could rise to more than 2.5 billion by 2050.

Hearing loss as an invisible barrier

Hearing loss is often an invisible disability that can have far-reaching social and psychological effects. Those affected not only experience a restriction in their ability to communicate, but also often suffer social isolation. The lack of opportunities to actively participate in social life often leads to loneliness, depression and a withdrawal from social networks. It is essential that society be made aware of these challenges in order to promote the inclusion and equal opportunities of people with hearing loss.

The role of the Lazarus Union as an awareness NGO

The Lazarus Union (CSLI) is a globally active NGO with general consultative status at ECOSOC (United Nations Economic and Social Council) that advocates for the inclusion of people with disabilities. A central aspect of its work is raising awareness of the challenges faced by people with hearing loss. The Lazarus Union sees it as its responsibility to bring the topic of hearing health into public discourse and to advocate for the rights of hearing-impaired people.

Awareness raising and social responsibility

As an awareness NGO, the Lazarus Union initiates information campaigns, supports self-help groups and cooperates with other organisations to improve the quality of life of hearing-impaired people. The organisation emphasises that hearing loss is not only an individual problem but also a social one that requires collective solutions. Access to hearing aids, barrier-free communication channels and social acceptance of people with hearing impairments are central concerns that the Lazarus Union represents at the global level.

Hearing Aid Day offers a valuable opportunity to raise awareness of the challenges and needs of people with hearing impairments. As an NGO in consultative status with ECOSOC, the Lazarus Union makes an important contribution to combating the isolation caused by hearing loss and promoting social inclusion. Inclusive social coexistence, based on respect, equal opportunities and solidarity, is a fundamental human right that must be guaranteed for all people, regardless of their hearing ability.
