The International Day for People of African Descent, observed annually on August 31, is a global recognition of the rich heritage, significant contributions, and resilient spirit of people of African descent. Proclaimed by the United Nations in 2020, this day aims to promote greater recognition and respect for the rights of people of African descent worldwide, while combating all forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia, and related intolerance.

Connection with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

The International Day for People of African Descent is intrinsically linked with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations.

  • SDG 4: Quality Education Ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education for people of African descent is a fundamental aspect. This involves addressing educational disparities and promoting lifelong learning opportunities that are accessible to all.
  • SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth By focusing on decent work and economic growth, the day underscores the importance of providing opportunities for productive employment and decent work conditions for people of African descent, fostering economic growth and reducing poverty.

  • Educational Disparities: In many countries, people of African descent face substantial educational disparities. For instance, in the United States, African American students are three times more likely to be suspended than their white peers.
  • Economic Inequality: Economic disparities are prevalent, with people of African descent often experiencing higher unemployment rates and lower income levels. In Brazil, Afro-Brazilians earn on average half the salary of their white counterparts.
