15th June – World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

(A/RES/66/127)

On 15th June, the world comes together to observe International World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, a day dedicated to highlighting the importance of preventing the abuse, neglect, and exploitation of older persons. This day serves as a powerful reminder of the respect and dignity that our elders deserve, and it underscores the urgent need to address the injustices that many older adults face globally.

The Lazarus Union, as an international non-governmental organization committed to humanitarian aid and social justice, recognizes the profound importance of this day. Our mission aligns closely with the objectives of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 10: Reduced Inequalities. SDG 10 aims to reduce inequality within and among countries, ensuring that no one is left behind, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status.

Elder abuse is a significant and often underreported issue that exacerbates social inequalities. Older individuals are particularly vulnerable to various forms of abuse, including physical, emotional, financial, and psychological abuse. This mistreatment not only violates their human rights but also deepens the chasms of inequality, as many elderly individuals lack the resources or support systems necessary to seek help and protection.

The Lazarus Union advocates for a world where older adults are valued, respected, and protected. Our efforts to support and empower older persons are inextricably linked to the broader goals of reducing inequality and promoting inclusive societies. By raising awareness, providing education, and advocating for stronger legal protections, we strive to create a safer and more equitable environment for our elders.

On this International World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, we call upon governments, organizations, and individuals to join us in taking decisive action to end elder abuse. Together, we can make significant strides toward achieving SDG 10, ensuring that all members of society, particularly our elders, can live with dignity and respect.
