840 MILLION HOURS WORKED BY NON-PROFIT ORGANISATIONS
Non-profit organisations in Austria provide almost 840 million hours of work per year. This is shown by a survey for 2021 conducted by Statistics Austria on behalf of the Ministry of Social Affairs.
Around 367 million of these working hours were paid. A further 470 million were accounted for by voluntary work. The economic added value of paid and voluntary work therefore totals more than 22 billion euros, it was calculated for the first time.
More than 6,000 non-profit organisations are active in Austria. Their work covers all areas of society – from social commitment, health and care to culture and sport.
More than five per cent of all hours worked
The 367 million paid working hours correspond to around 5.9 per cent of total employment and 5.2 per cent of all hours worked in Austria.
The non-profit organisations thus achieved a gross value added of 12.1 billion euros. That is 3.3 per cent of the total value added in Austria. Around 3.8 million people in Austria volunteered in their free time in 2021.
The survey puts the economic value of this voluntary work at 10.2 billion euros. These unpaid activities would increase the total value added in Austria by up to 2.8 per cent.
