30th June – International Day of Parliamentarism
On 30th June, the world observes the United Nations International Day of Parliamentarism, a day dedi-cated to celebrating the pivotal role that parliaments play in upholding democracy, ensuring the rule of law, and representing the voices of the people. This day serves as a reminder of the fundamental prin-ciples that underpin democratic societies and the importance of resilient parliamentary institutions.
In today’s world, democracies face numerous hazards, ranging from political polarization and disinfor-mation campaigns to threats against the independence of the judiciary and civil liberties. These chal-lenges underscore the critical need for strong, transparent, and accountable parliaments that can adapt to changing circumstances while steadfastly protecting democratic values.
The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 16 (SDG 16) emphasizes the promotion of peaceful and inclusive societies, access to justice for all, and the building of effective, accountable, and inclusive institutions at all levels. Parliaments are essential to achieving SDG 16, as they enact laws, allocate re-sources, and hold governments accountable. Their role is integral in fostering an environment where peace, justice, and strong institutions can thrive.
As an international non-governmental organization, the Lazarus Union is committed to supporting the principles of democracy and good governance. Our mission aligns closely with the objectives of SDG 16, as we advocate for inclusive societies and the strengthening of democratic institutions. The Inter-national Day of Parliamentarism is an opportunity for us to reaffirm our dedication to these goals and to highlight the importance of parliaments in safeguarding democracy.
In conclusion, the Lazarus Union stands in solidarity with parliaments worldwide, recognizing their cru-cial role in maintaining the democratic fabric of society. We call upon all stakeholders to support par-liamentary institutions and to work collaboratively towards a future where democracy is resilient and thriving, in alignment with the aspirations of SDG 16. Together, we can ensure that democracies not only endure but flourish, for the benefit of all humanity.
