20th June – World Refugee Day
(A/RES/55/76)
Statement on World Refugee Day and Its Connection to SDG 16
On World Refugee Day, observed annually on 20 June, we are reminded of the millions of individuals worldwide who have been forced to flee their homes due to conflict, persecution, and human rights violations. This day serves not only as a moment to honor their strength and resilience but also as a call to action for global solidarity and support.
The Sustainable Development Goal 16 (SDG 16) aims to promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all, and build effective, accountable, and inclusive institutions at all levels. This goal is intrinsically linked to the plight of refugees. Achieving SDG 16 means addressing the root causes of displacement, such as violence, discrimination, and lack of justice. It also involves ensuring that refugees are protected, can live with dignity, and are able to contribute to their host communities.
For the Lazarus Union, an international non-governmental organization dedicated to humanitarian aid, supporting refugees aligns with our core mission and values. Our commitment to providing relief and advocating for the rights of the vulnerable underscores the importance of SDG 16. By working towards inclusive and peaceful societies, we not only help mitigate the causes of forced migration but also create environments where refugees can rebuild their lives.
On this World Refugee Day, the Lazarus Union reaffirms its dedication to supporting refugees and promoting the principles of SDG 16. We call upon governments, organizations, and individuals worldwide to join us in this crucial endeavor. Together, we can create a world where peace, justice, and strong institutions are not just aspirations, but realities for all, including the displaced and the persecuted.
