11. July: World Population Day

Lazarus Union Statement on World Population Day

Vienna, July 11, 2024

On this World Population Day, the Lazarus Union reaffirms its commitment to addressing the challenges and opportunities presented by global population dynamics, in alignment with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

As a humanitarian organization, we recognize the critical importance of population issues in shaping the future of our world. The 2030 Agenda and the SDGs provide a comprehensive framework to address these challenges, and we are dedicated to contributing to their achievement.

Promoting Health and Well-being (SDG 3)

Ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all at all ages is paramount. The Lazarus Union continues to support initiatives that improve healthcare access, maternal health, and child survival rates. We advocate for comprehensive healthcare systems that can meet the needs of growing populations and address the challenges posed by aging demographics.

Quality Education for All (SDG 4)

Education is a cornerstone of sustainable development. We are committed to promoting inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong learning opportunities for all. By investing in education, we empower individuals to make informed choices about their lives, including family planning and reproductive health, thereby contributing to sustainable population growth.

Gender Equality (SDG 5)

Achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls is essential to addressing population issues. The Lazarus Union supports programs that combat gender-based violence, promote economic and political participation of women, and ensure access to reproductive health services. Gender equality is crucial for achieving sustainable population growth and improving the quality of life for all.

Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11)

Urbanization presents both challenges and opportunities. We strive to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. This includes advocating for affordable housing, sustainable transport systems, and green public spaces. Managing urban growth sustainably is key to ensuring that cities can support their populations without compromising future generations’ needs.

Climate Action (SDG 13)

The impacts of climate change are intricately linked with population dynamics. We support urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts. By promoting sustainable practices and advocating for climate resilience, we aim to protect the most vulnerable populations from the adverse effects of climate change and ensure a sustainable future for all.

Partnerships for the Goals (SDG 17)

Collaboration is essential for achieving the SDGs. The Lazarus Union is committed to building strong partnerships with governments, civil society, the private sector, and international organizations. Together, we can mobilize resources, share knowledge, and implement effective strategies to address population challenges and promote sustainable development.

On this World Population Day, we call upon all stakeholders to join us in our efforts to create a world where every individual can thrive. Let us work together to achieve the SDGs and ensure a sustainable, equitable, and prosperous future for all.
